Everything You Need to Know About Adaptogens

If you keep up with the health trends of Instagram, you've probably heard the word adaptogen once or twice. Although they are new to the world of health and wellness in Western medicine, adaptogens have been around for hundreds of years and have been used to heal the body and help it better adapt to various environments. In short, adaptogens help protect the body from the toxic effects of stress.

How Do They Work??

Adaptogens support your adrenal glands, which manage your bodies hormonal response to stress and help you better cope with anxiety and exhaustion. They help the body naturally improve it's ability to deal with and overcome physical, mental, and other environmental changes by supporting homeostasis.

How Do I Incorporate Adaptogens Into my Life?

Some adaptogens have a very distinct, strong taste compared to others. Depending on the adaptogen I am using, I will add them to my morning coffee or matcha, blend them into smoothies, nut balls, or mix into soups/other hot dishes.

Where Can I Buy Adaptogens?

I purchase the majority of my adaptogens on Amazon or Thrive Market. Sun Potion is one of my favorite brands, and I have found some of the best prices on Thrive Market. I also love Moon Juice adaptogenic powders, and have purchased them from Amazon as well as Urban Outfitters (random I know). Lastly, most adaptogens can be purchased from your local health/all natural grocery store.

1. Ashwagandha - Ashwagandha is one of my favorite adaptogens and has given me amazing results. The amazing thing is that it actually adapts to the specific needs of your body. It is best known for it's anti-inflammatory properties, it's ability to decrease stress, prevent weight gain, and help stabilize cortisol levels. Studies have also shown it to be beneficial to the cardiovascular, nervous, endocrine and immune systems.

2. Maca - Maca is another one of my go-to adaptogens (I put it in my coffee/matcha every single day). Maca is said to enhance energy, mood, and memory. Maca is rich in antioxidants which help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body and prevent cell damage. Maca is especially popular among women, and is known for its ability to balance estrogen levels and improve overall sexual health.

3. Cordyceps - Cordyceps are a mushroom-based adaptogen, and are especially great for maintaining good liver and kidney function. Today they are most commonly used to boost athletic performance and overall immunity.

4. Reishi - Reishi is yer another mushroom-based adaptogen that is known for it's neuro-protective properties and immune response support. Reishi is also great to help sooth the nervous system. I love Four Sigmatic reishi hot chocolate before bed, it's the perfect way to unwind.

5. Holy Basil (Tulsi) - Holy basil is considered to be India's most powerful herb. It's known for it's immune-stimulating properties, memory support, and remedy for bronchitis and to ease upset stomach and vomiting.

6. Chaga - Yet another mushroom, chaga is a wonderful grounding herb. It is often used to reduce anxiety, stress, and nervousness. Chaga mushroom has a high ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorbent Capacity), meaning it has the ability to protect the body from free-radicals. Chaga reduces inflammation in the body, stimulates the immune system, and has anti-viral properties.

7. Tocos - Tocos (rice bran solubles) is a rich source of fat-soluble natural vitamin E. Tocos are said to be hydrating to the skin and connective tissue.

My Favorites:

- Maju Superfoods: Ashwagandha Powder (recipe for adaptogenic coconut balls on Instagram)

- Sun Potion: Cordyceps, Reishi, Tocos

- Moon Juice: Dream Dust, Brain Dust

- Four Sigmatic: Mushroom Hot Cacao Mix, Mushroom Coffee Mix
